Graduate Students

I admit students through both the Ecology & Evolution http://ecoevo.rutgers.edu and the Entomology http://www-rci.rutgers.edu/~insects/gradprog.htm Graduate Programs. The offerings and requirements of the two programs are somewhat different, and admissions and funding decisions are made separately. Applicants interested in both programs can apply to both simultaneously. The research focus of my lab is pollination ecology, broadly defined to include insect ecology and plant reproductive biology. If you are interested in joining the lab, please email me with a brief description of your background and research interests, your undergraduate university, major and GPA, and GRE scores. Obtaining graduate admission with funding at Rutgers is highly competitive. I encourage prospective students to apply for external graduate funding such as an NSF Graduate Fellowship http://www.nsfgrfp.org/ , or an EPA STAR fellowship http://epa.gov/ncer/fellow/ .

Graduate Student Opportunities for Fall 2012

A 1-year fellowship position is available for an outstanding applicant to the Ph.D. program in Entomology. The fellowship includes full tuition remission and a competitive stipend. The remaining years in the Ph.D. program would be funded by a teaching assistantship (TA).

Undergraduates

Please email me with a description of your interest in joining the lab, and a bit about your academic background including your major and GPA.

Job Opportunities for 2012

We have multiple openings for research technician / field assistant positions in the lab in 2012. All positions are for field data collection and data processing for research projects on native bee pollination of crops as an ecosystem service, and/or on the restoration of native bee communities. The work includes collecting data on bee visitation to flowers, pollen deposition by different bee species, vegetation transects, net-collecting bee specimens, data entry, GIS data processing, and microscopy identification of pollen. Work dates are somewhat flexible. We are particularly interested in applicants who could stay for more than one position sequentially. Requirements: field research experience; insect identification skills (bee identification a big plus but not strictly required); ability to work long hours outdoors in varied weather conditions; great attention to detail; self-motivation, maturity and ability to work independently. Driver's license required and own vehicle a plus (we reimburse mileage). All positions are paid at between $12-$14 per hour, depending on experience. Interested applicants should send a description of their background and interest, along with contact information for at least 2 references, to Faye Benjamin fayeb@eden.rutgers.edu.
